Honey Badger Rashguard News
Version 2 of my series of honey badger themed rashguards will be available to buy from July 27th. It can already be reserved online here:
Tatami Fightwear
and
Budovideos
There will be other stores carrying this product but as far as I know, those are the only two websites offering a reservation service.
In other honey badger news, a print magazine advert will appear in several publications next month (see image above) and I've decided to sponsor a select few nogi fighters who will wear the rashguard at competitions over the next few weeks. I'll be posting more details about the fighters on here soon.
Hope people enjoy the look and design this time around, it's a lot more aggressive than the first design. Some early bird reviewers have already been raving about how much they love both the design and the quality of the material.
July 27th people!
Here is BJJGearJunkie.com's video review of the rashguard (click for written report):

Gi Review: Hemp Sensation by Submission Fight Co
Summary
A good quality and well fitting gi made from a material claimed to be stronger than cotton and antimicrobial.
Disclosures
I have no personal or business relationship with Submission Fight Company.
Introduction
Last year I reviewed one of the earlier Submission Fight Company gis. That model had very good construction quality with nice simple and clean design elements. It was a great value gi with a good price point, let down slightly by my sample having very short arms. Since that early offering, the company has moved towards something much more innovative - a gi made from hemp fibres and cotton. It is claimed that hemp is both superior in strength to cotton and offers antimicrobial properties. After my previous experience with the only other hemp made gi - the Datsusara (first generation), which I gave to Slidey for review (it was way too big for me), I wanted to know if the Submission FC version would be better than the Datsusara (which suffered from shrink, quality control and fit issues).
SIZE, WEIGHT & OTHER STATS
A1 gi stats. Units are in centimetres, first figure is brand new, second is after three 40 degree washes.
A: 161/157
B: 74/73
C: 58/56
D: 16/16
E: 51/50
F: 89/87
G: 23/23
Jacket weight = 1.1Kg
Trouser weight = 0.5Kg
Made in: Pakistan
Price: $159.95
Available from: http://www.submissionfc.com
In terms of size dimensions, the Hemp Sensation sits firmly in the upper range of gi sizes at A1. The sleeves, at 157cm long are a good deal longer than the original Submission Fc gi I reviewed last year (149cm) and are much more in line with, say, the Kingz Kimonos (157cm) or the Ronin Insignia (161cm). There are of course gi models with much shorter sleeves, notably the Atama Mundial #9 (150cm).
The body length, at 73 cm long is quite short compared to the Tatami Fightwear Honey Badger gi (77cm) but is comparable to the Gameness Elite (74cm).
Trouser length, at 87cm long is typical for most A1 gis - though I prefer the longer legs of the Tatami Estilo2 (96cm) and the Gameness Elite (96cm). But 87cm is perfectly wearable and legal under competition rules.
At a combined weight of 1.6Kg, the gi jacket and trousers are neither heavy nor ultra light.
JACKET
The hemp jacket is made from 70% hemp and 30% cotton. It is woven into a judo style single weave textile. It features dark green embroidered logos and contrast stitching. It is less bold in design than the original (non hemp) Submission FC light gi.
The back features embroidered font written in a cursive style.
The collar is quite thick and substantial. The rubbery core is covered by twill fabric which appears to look a little frayed after several washes.
The grain of the jacket is visible in the photo above as is the high quality of the embroidery. There are absolutely no visible indications from the textile alone that this gi is made from hemp.
Sleeve cuffs are lined with twill seam tape. These were nice and comfortable. Some woven tapes found on other gis can feel very scratchy and uncomfortable.
Side vents feature dark green lined tape. The jacket is reinforced well both here and under the armpits.
The jacket base is simply a single tuck and double stitch. Some more ornate gi brands add logo tape here, but the Hemp Sensation overall is very frill free.
The trousers feature rope drawstring which I prefer over flat cord. Five belt loops keep the rope in place, although the size of the loops seems a lot smaller than other gi brands. The trouser material is twill. The pants feel very light and comfortable, although a tad 'boxy' and roomy around the groin region. Knee lining could do with extending all the way to the ankles, but they were just long enough to cover my knees when I was in kneeling position. The ankle bottoms are a single tuck and quadruple stitched affair.
Rolling tests and conclusion
The Hemp Sensation felt very light and comfortable to train in. I rolled in this gi over a period of three weeks and it was a delight to wear. There was a slight odour that was difficult to eliminate despite 4-5 washes, I wondered if that might be due to the treatment necessary when handling hemp fibres or if that was just the usual factory smell found in some gis that disappeared eventually. I've certainly detected worse smelling gis so this did not put me off. As you can see from the photo above, it fits me very well in all areas.
Selling for a touch under $160, the hemp sensation is certainly not a cheap gi however it is a very well constructed, and for me, a well fitting gi that utilises a material that is allegedly stronger than cotton with antimicrobial properties. It is certainly a completely different product to the only other hemp gi on the market, by Datsusara, which is 100% hemp.

Meerkatsu Art: Event posters for Premier BJJ Championships
This is the poster for the tournament in Cork, Ireland.
and here is the promo poster for the following event in Bristol:
There will be one more this year - held in Gateshead and I'll be sorting out a poster for that too. In addition to posters, I'm supporting the event by designing medals and t-shirts.
For those interesting in how I put together the design of these posters, I wrote a little commentary on my art blog here: http://meerkatsu-art.blogspot.co.uk/2012/06/event-posters.html

Gi Review: Tatami Fightwear Purple Estilo
Summary
Bright and jazzy coloured model to the Estilo range from Tatami Fightwear. This gi carries all the usual high quality aspects of previous Estilo models with the added bonus of limited edition and novel colour.
Introduction
Tatami Fightwear's new purple version of the Estilo gi is the first in their new range of alternative colour gis. Future versions will include a variety of unusually dyed gis as the poster below suggests:
Clearly such gis are not IBJJF rules compliant however they offer the more daring jiu jitsu student something creative and expressive to wear during normal training (assuming your academy allows such non-traditional gi colours).
Disclosure
I have been commissioned in the past by Tatami Fightwear to produce artwork and designs. I have had no contribution to this design. This and the following report will be my own personal opinion and remain as objective and unbiased as I can.
Size, weight and other stats
Size in cm new vs three 40 degree washes for an A1 gi:
A: 162 / 160
B: 76 / 76
C: 56 / 56
D: 16.5 / 15.5
E: 51 / 50
F: 95 / 95
G: 21.5 / 21
Jacket weight: 1.2kg
Trouser weight: 0.5kg
As the stats above show, the shrinkage is very minimal even after three washes. The sleeve wingspan of 160cm is quite long and fits within the upper tier of most gi brands. The Atama Mundial A1 for example is 150cm and the Bull Terrier Limited Edition is 153cm. Other gi brands such as the Kingz gis and Submission Fight Co Hemp gi have wingspans of around 157cm.
Trouser length at 95cm is the typical length of Tatami fightwear gis. This would make them a little longer than many other brands, including those mentioned above.
Weight at 1.7Kg would make this gi heavier than specialist lightweight gis such as the Do or Die Hyperfly gi (1.4Kg).
Jacket
The first noticeable visible aspect to the purple estilo is the distinct lack of patches. The standard Estilo (currently v3.0) is festooned with chest, shoulder and leg patches. The fabric used is 500gsm pearlweave cotton.
The purple Estilo collar is constructed from stiff rubber foam and covered with canvas cotton. Stitching is a shiny grey colour that also appears on the side vent trim.
A single laurel leaf 'Estilo' patch is embroidered on each sleeve.
The type of purple used to dye the gi is quite light, edging towards the more lilac end of the purple spectrum but not so light that it could be construed as too feminine. It's not too dissimilar to the only other purple coloured gi that I know of - the Reversal purple lightning gi - see here for a review.
The image below shows the canvas cotton tape used to line the cuffs. This is a far more suitable material compared to woven tape which I have found can be scratchy on my skin.
Trousers
As with the standard Estilo gi, the trousers are made from canvas cotton. The Tatami website states there are 'heavy 14oz canvas' but in my hands they don't seem to feel heavy or thick.
As with other Estilo models, the trousers are held up using rope drawstring. If I was being niggly, I would personally like to see the double knee layer extend all the way to the base of the trousers.
The base of the trousers are reinforced with a simple fold over hem. Other gi brands tend to add an extra layer of tape here.
Rolling tests and conclusion
This gi, as with all previous versions of the Estilo fits my dimensions very well. The construction is very high quality in my opinion and I have not had any issues with my previous models (Estilo 3 and Estilo 2 are part of my normal rotation of gis) so I fully expect the purple to hold up just as well.
Some people however may find the sleeve lengths too long for their dimensions. I understand the new versions of the Estilo may have their arms cut shorter. But for now, the purple Estilo seems to be tailor made or me :)
There is an issue with the colour fade however. After 3-4 washes, I noticed a little bit of uneven fading. Unfortunately it is not enough to really show up in my photographs, but there does appear to me slightly more fading along the creases of both the jacket and trousers compared to the main part of the fabric leading to a slight stone-washed effect. This unevenness may reduce over time as the whole gi fades through the washes, only time will tell.
BJJ is a fun sport and in my personal opinion, fun products such as this gi merely enhance the enjoyment. Not all academies allow such gi colours and IBJJF gi colour rulings mean it won't be allowed in such tournaments. However, if you fancy something a bit different, the purple Estilo is a quality addition to the Tatami range and yet another gi to add to my rotation of favoured gis.

BJJ DVD Project ? Mundials 2004, Best Sweeps
Unlike takedowns and guard passes, sweeps are harder to categorize. Fighters have highly developed guards that often blur the lines between textbook positions and straightforward sweeps. What starts as a hook sweep from butterfly guard may end as a backroll from half guard. A fighter may move from half guard to DLR to sitting up guard to butterfly guard to a hook sweep then standing into a single leg (and all that in about 3 seconds.)
This “blending” becomes a defining aspects of most sweeps. They are rarely “one shot” …
