Vacation rolling

I've been on holiday this week. My wife, kids and I really love the south Coast of England and by chance Bournemouth also happens to host a number of gyms where I can pop in and train - win win!
We were very luck to have had some quite outstandingly hot and sunny weather so it almost felt like training abroad!

My first port of call was to visit Matt and Ben at Scramble. In the photo, we're standing in their ginormawarehouse and I'm holding a their mini kimono car mirror thingy which they give away if you order lots of their stuffs. I was also presented with their latest 'shadows' rashguard, which I will duly test and report at some point very soon.

Later on, I popped in to the Gary Baker Academy for a few rolls. Last time I visited, Matt was teaching but this time, I turned up to a session run by Gary himself. I also had a great chat to Gary, who has been training in various martial arts for a very long time under some very renowned instructors. It was great to meet and train with the guys there and I had a lot of fun. Gary tells me he will be moving to a new location next week - a converted car showroom with squillions of floor space and glass and steel everywhere. It should be awesome by the sounds of it and I look forward to returning to see how it all looks.

As you can sort of see from my Instagrammed snap above, I got the chance to really test out the new purple gi made by Tatami Fightwear. I must say so far I really like it. Wash tests should see how it shrinks over time, which will make or break it as a gi for me personally, but so far, it's been a pleasure to wear.

So, in between fending off having sand kicked in my face by my kids and running away from manic wasps, I still found time for one more training session. This time I visited the Ippon Gym, run by an MMA fighter called Jeff Lawson. Jeff is known worldwide for his appearance as a fighter on the TV show TUF. He's a kickass MMA athlete and I can testify from personal experience that his jiu jitsu (Jeff is a brown belt) is very very badass too!

Saturday mornings at Jeff's place is open mat so I managed a bunch of refreshingly invigorating nogi and gi rolls with various peeps.  I must say Jeff has done a fantastic job of creating an excellent gym. I wish him the best of luck and mucho fun at their first birthday bash next month.

BTW it's probably no coincidence that I have done some design work for all the people I have mentioned in this report.  Here for example is the cartoon car I drew for Jeff - he uses the car as a mobile advert when he drives around town. The cartoon sticker is a promotional item he gives out to people he meets. It's great marketing!

Thanks so much to everyone's hospitality during my unannounced visits to their gym!

Tournament: SENI 2012

I had the great pleasure of attending the SENI Expo yesterday. SENI is a biannual expo for the martial arts industry and is always a great magnet for students, instructors, apparel and gear makers all over the UK to join together in one venue.

I was there to compete in the London International BJJ Open, which I helped by contributing designs for the official winner t-shirts and posters (as modelled in the photo above). I competed in the purple belt masters category in the under 65kg division. I only had one other competitor - Brendan from London Fight Factory. I fought Brendan before at the last SENI two years ago. Previously I was puled into Brendan's guard and submitted with a cross collar choke. This time round I fared a little better. I managed to pull guard, sweep him and then worked my closed guard. Unfortunately I can't quite recall how I made a mistake but I did and Brendan managed to pass my guard and land an excruciatingly painful knee on belly. I nearly tapped from this alone, but he transitioned neatly into an armbar. I quickly tapped, relieved that the knee was off my stomach. Despite the loss, I can take lot of positives from the fight, I feel good that I managed to at least work some of my game and to be honest, maybe I'm wrong for not taking things more seriously, but I had a blast! I love competing for the pure rush of fighting on the mat. I don't really get too bothered about losing (which admittedly, happens a lot!). Anyway, I have no plans to stop unless old age or injury decide for me.

The rest of the tournament was brilliant to watch. My own team mates performed exceedingly well against some very tough opponents. For a photo gallery of the day, check out my Facebook page gallery here.
It was also lovely to meet so many people - familiar faces, friends from other academies, fightwear contacts, art clients and just regular readers of the blog and my FB page. Oss to you all!

Finally, here's a nogi fight that was happening on the mats next to our BJJ tournament. It features my friend Danielle 'The Curse' West. Check out her gravity defying submission around 1min18secs. I've met Danielle many times at comps in the past. I also created her personal logo, which you can see below the video. I casually dubbed her armbar submission a Flying cartwheel armbar but I then dubbed it the Flying Cursebar. Anyway, looks like her fight as gone a bit viral!!
Enjoy!!

BJJ DVD Project ? Mundials 2004, Best Sweeps

Unlike takedowns and guard passes, sweeps are harder to categorize. Fighters have highly developed guards that often blur the lines between textbook positions and straightforward sweeps. What starts as a hook sweep from butterfly guard may end as a backroll from half guard. A fighter may move from half guard to DLR to sitting up guard to butterfly guard to a hook sweep then standing into a single leg (and all that in about 3 seconds.)

This “blending” becomes a defining aspects of most sweeps. They are rarely “one shot” …

Gi Review: Inverted Gear, Panda Gi

Summary
Cute branding help this gi model stand out above the crowd. Superb construction, copious additions and attention to details help make this gi an impressive debut offering from Inverted Gear. The A1s in-between size however was probably a touch too big for me.

Introduction
I first spotted the panda graphic on Facebook a few months back and was curious to find out more. Something about it immediately appealed - the cuddly but inexpressive panda playfully inverting itself in readiness for upside-downy-jiu jitsu is a brilliant mascot...my only wish was that I should have thought of it myself!

I also like the mission statement on the website, "We are not for the tough guys."
Brilliant!
But does a 'soft guy' image mean the gi would be soft and limp?

Size, Weight and other Stats

Size in centimetres, first figure new, second after three 40 degree washes, air dried.
A: 171 / 170
B: 74 / 73
C: 56 / 56
D: 16 / 16
E: 101 / 99
F: 52 / 50
G: 21/20
Jacket weight: 1.1Kg
Trouser weight: 0.6Kg

Compared to even the biggest of A1 gis from other brands, the sleeve wingspan of the A1s is very long. The other in-betweeny sizes I have reviewed, Shoyoroll Count and Bull Terrier New Star (162cm and 157cm respectively) are much shorter by a magnitude. The trouser lengths are much more in line with what I expect a model in between A1 and A2 to be. The very minimal shrinkage was impressive! Weighing in at a total of 1.7Kg, it's not too heavy either.

Jacket
The Inverted Gear Panda gi jacket is made from pearlweave cotton fabric. Listed at 550gsm in weight, it's a sturdy piece of cloth designed for everyday training, rather than weight cutting tournament use.

As the 550gsm would indicate, the fabric feels 'weighty' and durable but not necessarily heavy. The collar (below) is the standard foam core covered by ripstop cotton.

The inverted panda graphic is embroidered directly onto the upper sleeves. It's very eye-catching despite being quite small.

The panda graphic is further repeated on the tape used to line the inside of the cuffs. In fact the cuffs are reinforced with the panda tape PLUS a layer of ripstop material. It's an impressively sturdy design and I very much doubt this portion of the gi will suffer wear and tear compared to brands without reinforcing tape. Happily, the woven panda tape is tucked over so no scratchy edges - something I have found to be incredibly annoying (and cheap) with other gis.

More ripstop material is used to cover the side vents plus, as you can see below, more panda branded tape reinforces the lower jacket hem.

Inverted Gear's size charts reflect the increasingly popular trend for gear companies to offer in between sizes. My sample was the A1S - bigger than an A1, not quite as wide or long as the A2.

Teardrop shaped patch of gi material reinforces the armpit. Like a doofus, I neglected to photograph the very important extra band of tape used to reinforce the upper torso section with the lower portion. But you can see the stitching running from centre middle to the far left on the photo below. Again, a very impressive level of additional strength in a zone of comparative weakness.

Trousers
Inverted Gear's dedication to high quality and attention to detail continues with the trousers. A good not too spongy rope drawstring cord is held in place by no less and EIGHT belt loops. Two of those loops are very wide - helping to maintain the rope in its position.

The trousers are made from ripstop cotton. It is a measure of how ripstop has progressed since the first few companies that utilised this fabric. A few years back, many users noted how ripstop trousers would feel 'waxy', thick and quite uncomfortable. This is certainly NOT the case with the Inverted Gear trousers. The ripstop material used here is light and flexibly malleable.

The photo above shows how the crotch gusset is made from pearlweave gi material. Presumably used as it is a stronger fabric to use in this high stress zone. Triple row stitching binds these parts together.

A closer detail of the first belt loops. The extra width of this loop helps keep the rope drawstring in position and prevent it riding up.

The ankle openings of the panda gi is lined with the panda tape as the sleeves. Unlike the sleeves however, there is no extra layer of ripstop tape.

The panda gi throws in a nice little surprise - a pocket, tucked inside the front of the trousers. I imagine it would be handy to store a gumshield or ID card. A simple overlap covers the pocket to prevent the contents from falling out. It's a wonderfully well thought out little touch that most other companies won't bother with.

Rolling performance and conclusions

The construction quality of this gi is beyond doubt. It's an extremely sturdy, yet still comfortably well balanced uniform. But, as you can probably see from the photos here (and backed up by the stats), the A1s size was just too long even for my ape-like long arms and legs. The torso length and width was good though. My arms did feel swamped by the sleeve lengths. I would be interested to compare this with their normal A1.

Despite the arm lengths, the fit and cut of this gi is very good. It's not too baggy and not too tight. If I wanted to tweak it and make it perfect, I would probably pay for a tailor to shorten the arms - though the multiple layers of reinforcing tape might prove cumbersome to remove and re-affix.

Rolling in the gi I felt hampered by the sleeves and the pants could probably do with being shorter, although they did not affect my movement too much. The 550gsm 'weight' of the gi did not mean it felt too heavy, the weight felt fine during several weeks of training and testing.

Overall I'm pretty pleased with this effort from Inverted Gear. The quality of materials and great little additional touches along with a very attractive price point ($135) means that the panda gi is fantastic value for money. It would be nice if Inverted Gear posted more a detailed size chart, including sleeve wingspan lengths and trouser lengths. In my opinion, the old model of weight v height comparison is too narrow for a large percentage of the population.

Seminar: Lucas Leite

I popped down to London Fight Factory yesterday to attend a seminar by the 'half-guard wizard' Lucas Leite.

Lucas is a top class competitor and has won numerous titles, including Mundials in 2007 at black belt and in 2005 at brown belt. He fights in the incredibly stacked division of middleweight (think Kron Gracie, Claudio Calasans, Victor Estima etc etc) and you'll see how someone of Lucas's calibre has to be both physically and mentally at the top of their game. With his devastating game, based largely around the open half guard, his game is very much something I like to aspire to. Here's my very potted summary of the event...

Gi
Lucas began the session with one and half hours of gi based techniques. He explained how he liked to get in to an open half guard position but that often his opponents would like to flatten him out. There followed a very revealing and simple method to extract oneself from the top guy shoulder pressure and manoeuvre for the underhook. Lucas then showed several options for the half guard sweep or back take dependent on how the opponent reacts. The principle counter to expect when underhooking from half guard is that the opponent slides his arm under yours - the so called 'whizzer'. Lucas showed us how to effectively deal with this.

Lucas then took the base techniques that he showed from the first few moves and showed how they could be applied when, for example, attacking an opponent who turtles up, or, another move to escape side control and even gain a better position as a result. It was all great stuff and very useful for a bottom guard player like me.

Nogi
The second one and a half hours (yes a three hour seminar!) was dedicated to nogi. Lucas opened up with a demonstration of how he likes to take an opponent down while he is sitting. It involved a pretty evil sweep followed swiftly by a most effective straight achilles lock. Lucas explained how to place ones shoulder far behind your torso to effect the submission. The academy floor soon echoed to the collective cries of OUCH and the palm slapping of mass taps. It was brutal but brilliantly effective.

One of my favourite techniques involved moving into deep half guard from a butterfly guard. But the deep half was not the object of the transition, it was merely a place to work the opponent's legs into a knee-poppingly painful calf crush. It was so simple, but I don't think I have ever experienced a submission so painful. My partner Brendan and I gingerly drilled this but no matter how softly one does it, it still hurt like hell...which of course meant I loved it more!

The main meat of the nogi portion was dedicated to a selection of neck attacks. Lucas put us through a series of guillotine attacks, followed by the anaconda choke and completed with the darce. Then he combined all three attacks together, flipping his body around his opponent to show the wonderful movement he has and the angles he wanted us to learn in order to make each submission work best. Brendan and I had great fun tearing each others heads off, though I don't think anyone in the room was working the triple threat of neck attacks as smoothly as Lucas showed. Lucas admitted that it needed a lot of practice but if these three were drilled then over time he guaranteed us it would be make our nogi game so much better. I can believe him!

Thanks
I'd like to thank Luiz who runs London Fight Factory for inviting both me and Callum (editor of Jiu Jitsu Style Magazine) down for the seminar and the chance to interview and photograph Lucas. A big hello and thanks also to my buddies from LFF who always make me feel so welcome.

I hear the current star World Champion 'Buchecha' might be making a visit to London soon, along with his instructor Cavaca. Seriously it doesn't get any better in BJJ world lol!
